The Real Barrier

Isolation is the real disability in rural Busoga. The wheelchair is just where we start solving it.

Busoga has Uganda's highest self-care difficulty rate, 5.2%, per UBOS 2024. Most of that isn't visible in a clinic. It's visible in who gets left behind at home while everyone else goes to school, to market, to church.

An imported wheelchair with thin tires and plastic parts lasts weeks on our roads. When it breaks, there's no local part to fix it with, and the isolation returns. So we build differently: for the terrain we actually have, with materials we can actually replace.

From the Workshop

Wheels of Equity started inside Wheels of Equity, a community-based organisation working across the Busoga subregion. Every wheelchair we build is fitted by hand, measured to the person, not the other way around.

Every finished chair is also a job. Recipients go through a carpentry skilling program alongside receiving their wheelchair.

That's deliberate. A wheelchair changes how far someone can travel. A skill changes what they can build once they get there. We treat both as part of the same repair.

FRAME

Hardwood, not imported steel

Sourced locally and shaped by hand, so a cracked frame is a carpentry job, not a shipping order.

TERRAIN

Fitted for red dirt roads

Wider, terrain-grade casters and reinforced joints, built for the roads people actually travel on in Busoga, not showroom floors.

REPAIR

Fixable at home, for good

Every part is chosen so the nearest carpenter or welder can repair it, no imported components, no waiting.
